This handmade book introduces children to scientific material in an engaging and age-appropriate manner. The playful plot line follows Bab E. Bovis (a play on Babesia Bovis, a single-celled protozoan parasite of cattle) on her journey through the bloodstream.
Background:
Known colloquially as Texas cattle fever, the disease caused by Babesia bovis is transmitted to cows from the bite of an infected tick. Once released into the bloodstream, the parasites invade individual red blood cells, multiplying and destroying the host cells until the animal is stricken with hemolytic anemia. Adult ticks which feed upon infected cattle are infected themselves, completing the cycle.
